making it happen

Creating a green, global and connected city

In June 2008, the City of Sydney adopted the Sustainable Sydney 2030 Vision and its 186 initiatives as a ‘road map’ to take us towards a more sustainable future.
The 2030 Vision sets a new agenda for how the City delivers services, projects and public domain improvements.
Many actions apply to core business areas of Council’s responsibility and are being implemented immediately. Others represent more complex projects, and staff are undertaking more detailed planning to implement these initiatives long term. The City has committed to ongoing consultation with all stakeholders and will continue to work with State and Federal Government agencies to make Sustainable Sydney 2030 a reality

A new agenda for service delivery

Actions within Sustainable Sydney 2030 have been embedded in the City’s Corporate Plan, which is reported to Council through quarterly reports. The Corporate Plan sets out the City of Sydney four year objectives, and the major projects, programs and services to be undertaken.

A bold start

Many key 2030 actions are already underway – the City’s operations are now carbon-neutral and we are developing additional programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the city.

We have achieved considerable reductions in water and energy consumption across the City’s parks, pools and properties.

Design and construction of key components of what will become our Liveable Green Network is also underway. The King Street and Bourke Street cycleways are just two of the projects in a $77M program that will see the creation of  200km of cycling network in our city – a network which includes 55km of separated cycleways and another 145km of dedicated cycleways and shared paths.

The City has also begun the detailed work on a range of other actions including developing the Glebe Affordable Housing project with the State Government and planning for trigeneration technology to reduce reliance on coal-fired power generation.

Making it happen

A recent City event, Sustainable Sydney 2030: Towards a Green Future, was an opportunity for key City staff to report back to our 2030 partners on the progress we have made one year since the launch of the Vision. Here you can watch the presentations from the day, as well as some fascinating panel discussions on making sustainability a reality in Sydney.
