Project
The City of Sydney seeks to achieve energy savings in buildings and transportation, encourage renewable energy usage, and reduce air pollution within the City LGA.
Project
The City of Sydney aims to remove its dependence on coal–fired electricity and increase its self sufficiency of low carbon energy and sustainable water supplies to and beyond 2030. To do this we are developing a City-wide plan to implement Trigeneration technology - a way to generate 'green' power from natural gas, and capture waste heat to generate electricity, heating and cooling.
Project
In achieving our 70% carbon reduction target, the City must take leadership by greening our own operations. We are changing the ways our properties are powered, upgrading our vehicle fleet with greener trucks and cars, installing water efficient fittings and fixtures and introducing ways that staff can take responsibility for their own team's environmental footprint.
During consultation for Sustainable Sydney 2030, residents told us that they want greater access to ethically and locally produced food.
In response, Council has employed a dedicated garden officer and is increasing the number of community gardens.
The 2030 Vision articulated a need to reduce impacts of waste. In 2008 the City diverted 16,655 tonnes of residential waste from landfill and by 2014 we have set a 66 per cent resource recovery target. To help achieve this target, we are investigating an Alternative Waste Technology Facility which could also provide an opportunity to process commercial waste and generate renewable fuels. The City has called for Expressions of Interest for companies to give us detailed design options on proposed locations and technologies for such a facility.
Sustainable Sydney 2030 sets a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 1990 levels by 2030. Street lighting is Council's largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions. The City will undertake a 6-month trial installation of LED light fittings to help determine community acceptance of the lighting and aesthetics, operational issues, energy use, and capacity to meet the relevant lighting standards.
