Revitalising Our Laneways

The City of Sydney is creating renewed interest and vibrancy in the city’s laneways through public art initiatives and vibrant and creative events. Additionally, a Business Development program is in place which provides matched cash funding to small businesses of up to $30,000.

Linked City Squares for Public Life

Eminent Danish architect Jan Gehl, suggests that George Street should be a celebrated North-South boulevard. George Street would link three public squares - a harbour-side gateway at Circular Quay, a new civic Town Hall Square and a lively Central Station Precinct.

    1. 5.1 Strengthen the City's public domain identity and create more places for meeting, rest and leisure
    2. 5.2  Provide an activity focus for the City Centre  worker and visitor communities

    3. 5.3 Manage and strengthen precincts in the City Centre

    4. 5.4 Increase the supply of small scale spaces for retail and small businesses on streets and lanes
    5. 5.5 Assist appropriate small businesses to locate and thrive in the City Centre

    6. 5.6 Support the development of diverse, new bars and restaurants in the City Centre

  • Targets:

    By 2030 there will be:

    • 10 per cent of trips made in the City by walking and cycling—50 per cent of trips made by walking
    • 45 per cent of people believing most people can be trusted
