King Street is Newtown’s great public asset and its strongest urban element - a busy, winding retail strip that traces the original ridge line.
It is a socially diverse, public promenade enjoyed by a cosmopolitan community and visitors.
The consistent narrow retail shops create a strip of interesting retail, fashion, eating and cultural destinations.
Ideas for ‘Newtown Square’ would integrate Newtown Station and create links to Enmore Road and the tram shed precinct, giving priority to pedestrians, enhancing public space and improving links between the train station and Australia Street Square.
The former heritage tram sheds could be part of a new mixed use precinct around the staion with small businesses, fresh food markets, cafes, and learning and creative activities.
These ideas will be explored in partnership with Marrickville Council, the State Government and the local community.
These strategic moves would add to the area’s distinctive authentic, quirky and historic character and support the local arts, creative and live music scenes.
