Bought for a gallon of rum by wool industry pioneer John Macarthur, the Pyrmont peninsula is another part of the city experiencing exciting changes. The area's wharves and factories, which were once a critical part of Sydney's industrial waterfront, have been reinvigorated, with recent developments such as Jones Bay Wharf boasting slick apartments, office spaces and waterfront restaurants, while maintaining the district’s established public housing infrastructure.

Shopping is concentrated around Harris Street, while the bustling Sydney Fish Market in Bank Street and The Good Living Growers' Market at Pyrmont Bay Park provide Sydneysiders with an abundance of fresh food options.

Once the power station for Sydney's tram network, The Powerhouse Museum has recharged the nearby suburb of Ultimo, which today is home to parks, historic pubs and a substantial Chinese community. Equally, institutions such as the ABC and UTS have transformed Harris Street into a focus of media and technology, while the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre has refreshed the architectural landscape with its glass walls and wave-shaped roof.

Neighbouring Broadway has long been a popular shopping precinct and the old Grace Bros building, now the Broadway Shopping Centre, is a living reminder of this retail heritage.
