Glebe, Forest Lodge & Broadway

Glebe
Click Map for a larger view.

The Glebe Point area became fashionable in the early 19th century, while the southern part of Glebe later became a working class district. Today this is one of the city’s most attractive villages, where students, artists, ‘old-timers’ and backpackers all rub shoulders harmoniously.

In addition to its many shops, galleries and restaurants, the area boasts waterfront parks and an array of historic workers’ houses and grand mansions. Neighbouring Forest Lodge has the Harold Park Paceway, while across Broadway the small enclave of Chippendale is home to friendly pubs and charming terraced houses.

Blackwattle Bay Park

In a peaceful setting, with a mixture of native planting and grassy areas, this waterfront reserve enjoys excellent views of the Anzac Bridge and the bay.

Dr H J Foley Rest Park

This important civic park is located in the heart of Glebe. Named after Dr H J Foley, Mayor of Glebe from 1937–38, the park features a playground, a World War I memorial and an historic brick shelter where local residents once gathered to listen to the radio. Today, the park remains a focal
point for community activity.

Jubilee Park

Directly adjacent to Bicentennial Park, Jubilee Park features a playground, picnic sheds and tables. Jubilee Oval has an historic grandstand and a large sporting field suitable for cricket, hockey and Australian Rules Football.

Peace Park

Located in Myrtle Street, Chippendale, this small neighbourhood park includes a children’s playground.

Victoria Park

Next to Sydney University at Broadway, this spacious parkland incorporates a popular heated outdoor swimming pool and is enhanced by beautiful Lake Northam and its resident ducks.

Wentworth Park

Adjacent to the Sydney Fish Market and Blackwattle Bay, Wentworth Park is a vital green space for local residents. Spanning more than 12 hectares, it features sporting fields suitable for soccer and Rugby League, a playground and public toilets. The park will eventually be part of the Glebe Foreshore Walk.

Shopping

Glebe point Road is renowned for its new age shops and alternative therapy centres, gourmet food, art, craft and antique galleries and some famous bookstores. There are more bookshops on St Johns Road and Bridge Road, and the large Broadway Shopping Centre is great for grocery and everyday shopping until late.

Glebe is perhaps at its best on Saturdays, when the Glebe Markets, held in the grounds of the local Public School, offer over 200 stalls selling everything from clothing to plants.

Dining

Once again, Glebe Point Road is the place to go! This wonderful dining precinct is home to over 60 cafes, restaurants and pub dining rooms – most of which are moderately priced.

The area caters for all tastes, with Modern Australian, Italian, Nepalese, Korean, Middle Eastern, Greek, Spanish, vegetarian and many other cuisines on offer.

There are plenty of takeaways, including a famous pie shop, and everything from great breakfast cafes to several late – night eateries.

Did You Know?

Glebe is the haunt of Peter Corris’s fictional detective, Cliff Hardy, who lived near the Wentworth Park dog racing track.

Sir Edmund Barton, Australia ’s first Prime Minister, was born in Glebe’s Hereford Street in 1849.

The Glebe was a land grant of 400 acres given by Governor Arthur Phillip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet, in 1790. The term ‘glebe lands’ refers to land given to the church for its support. Johnson did little with the land and it soon became the domain of timber cutters and fishermen.
