Inner West
Any experience of Newtown confirms that the Inner West’s middle name is 'diversity'. A stroll along King Street is likely to bring you into contact with goths, hippies, dreadlocked buskers... name your subculture!
The suburb's left-of-centre aesthetic has long made it home to many artists, writers and musicians, and today it’s saturated with live music venues, performing arts spaces and quirky pubs.
Newtown's cuisine also reflects the area's eclectic vibe, with Thai restaurants, Turkish kebab joints, plus the odd African, Japanese and Portuguese eatery, all rubbing shoulders along the strip.
The first suburban shopping centre outside the City Centre, King Street is still a shopping mecca, but these days there's an eco emphasis emanating from the umpteen vintage and recycled clothing stores. Newtown is encircled by a cluster of other idiosyncratic suburbs: Camperdown, Chippendale, Darlington and Erskineville. The University of Sydney set up camp in Camperdown in 1850, and since then has earned a reputation as a progressive institution, through everything from its world-class research to its organic food cooperative.
Chippendale boasts a handful of friendly watering holes and numerous art spaces, while leafy Erskineville, has an authentic village atmosphere complete with neighbourhood delis, florists and community sausage sizzles.
