Oxford Street & Paddington
One of Sydney’s most ‘hip’ suburbs, modern Paddington is a mecca for trendy shoppers and diners and well known for its markets.
The first cottages were built around the 1840s Victoria Barracks Army base, and the area is still famous for its charming terraced houses and other National Trust listed architecture.
South of Oxford Street is the small leafy suburb of Centennial Park and the Moore Park precinct, containing two of Sydney’s great sports grounds, the SCG and Aussie Stadium, and The Entertainment Quarter, formerly Fox Studio.

Shopping
Shop for the latest fashions and accessories, books, gifts, artworks, homewares, deligoods and fresh food on Oxford Street.
This buzzing thoroughfare is at its best on Saturdays, when the long-running Paddington Markets feature dozens of stalls offering clothing, gourmet foods, plants, books and handcrafted goods, as well as live entertainment and delicious food.
The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park is an other great shopping area, with late-night opening, and Wednesday and weekend markets that specialise in produce, clothing and collectables.
Dining
Oxford Street is also the area’s main dining strip with no shortage of places to eat – all the way from Darlinghurst to Centennial Park.
The best restaurant areas, however, are west of Victoria Barracks, mostly pubs and ethnic restaurants and east of Paddington Town Hall, an area that is particularly good for daytime cafes and pub restaurants.
The Entertainment Quarter offers global dining, with over 20 places to eat – from coffee shops to seafood and superb Chinese cuisine.
Did You Know?
The name Paddington comes from the property of one of the area’s earliest settlers, John Cooper, who probably named his house after the London suburb.
The main block of Victoria Barracks is an extraordinary 226 metres long. Tours each Thursday take in a military museum and band performance as well as the historic barracks themselves.
