Conditions of Access

To ensure the preservation of the archival records and to protect the Council’s ownership of them researchers must comply with these rules when using the Archives. By completing the sign-in book you agree that you have read and understood these rules and agree to abide by them at all times. If you have any questions please ask the Archivist.

  1. You must complete an entry in the sign-in book, fully and accurately each day you visit the Archives.
  2. All applicable fees must be paid, at the time of your visit or (by arrangement) on invoice from the City of Sydney.
  3. No archival records are to be removed from the Archives without permission and in accordance with any conditions that may be imposed.
  4. Archival records may be examined only in the Archives reading room, unless alternative arrangements are made by the Archivist.
  5. Do not smoke or bring food or drinks into the Archives premises. The Archivist may request you to leave bags satchels and overcoats outside the reading room. Secure lockers are provided.
  6. Do not write on or mark any archival records, or change the order of any documents, or disassemble any files, or add to or remove any documents.
  7. Access to archival records that are fragile or confidential may be refused, or granted subject to special conditions.
  8. Microfilm or digital copies of some archival records will be made available in place of the original materials.
  9. Copies of archival records made available to researchers are not to be further reproduced in any form without the permission of the Council.
  10. Use of information from the Archives, including copies approved for reproduction, must be credited to the City of Sydney Archives. The Archivist should be consulted as to the precise form of citations.
  11. The Council accepts no responsibility for any contravention of copyright or other law which a researcher may commit in making use of material made accessible through the Archives.
  12. Researchers making use of the City of Sydney Archives indemnify the Council against any loss damages or expenses incurred by the Council arising from a breach, by the researcher, of these conditions.

These rules are posted in the City of Sydney Archives reading room. Copies are also available for researchers to take away. Please take a copy for your records.
