Electoral History

This introduction to the City’s electoral history by Hilary Golder provides background information for the analysis of municipal elections held during the years 1842-1992. Changes in the broader social, economic and political context of those elections are covered in Shirley Fitzgerald Sydney 1842-1992 (Hale and Iremonger, Sydney, 1992).

The Short Electoral History concentrates on electoral mechanics, in themselves highly political issues, which often determined the outcome of the contests. These include:

  • the manipulation of city and ward boundaries
  • changes to the city franchise
  • changes to voting systems (first-past-the-post, proportional representation etc).
