Sydney 2000: The city comes alive

During the Sydney Olympics in 2000 the centre of the city thronged with visitors, locals, and workers. The City of Sydney equipped dozens of staff members with cameras and instructed them to roam the Olympic city and record its fabulously festive atmosphere: tourists, spectators, partygoers, performers, and even the workers who pulled the whole show together.

In addition, the City of Sydney's History Program commissioned historian Michelle Arrow and photographer Liz Cotter to document in voice and image the Olympic period in Sydney, culminating in an exhibition titled 'Our City Our Games' in 2001.

The voices and pictures in this video arose primarily from those projects and were mainly collected in the live sites in the city which hosted entertainment, partying crowds and huge screens beaming in major events from Sydney Olympic Park.

The City of Sydney library network holds a special Olympics collection; and many images from the Olympics period can be viewed online at the City Archives.
