Dictionary of Sydney Project

Sydney's history, online and connected.Dictionary of Sydney logo

The Dictionary of Sydney is landmark history initiative led by the City of Sydney and the University of Sydney and supported by Sydney's leading cultural institutions. It aims to present the history of all of metropolitan Sydney online, and through other mediums. It will become a forum for public discussion, education and entertainment. If it happened in Sydney, then it belongs in the Dictionary.

The main website is a window into the repository of material produced for the project. It covers the whole Sydney basin, from earliest human habitation to the present. With input from more than 200 authors, the Dictionary is an ever-expanding resource, with hundreds of entries, over 1,000 multimedia items and thousands of fact snippets so far.

Browse Sydney's people, places, organisations and events, or search for something specific. There are essays on big themes and issues in the city's history, and entries on individuals and buildings, and everything in between. There are full demographic statistics for each of Sydney's 700+ suburbs, as well as maps and timelines.

Website users are invited to make suggestions, provide images, film and stories through the Contact and Contribute links. The feedback goes into the editorial process, and can influence the future development of the Dictionary.

Sydney Journal
Sydney Journal is an academic journal where some of the material gathered for the Dictionary is presented in another format. Browse the 4 issues published so far.

Dictionary of Sydney Trust
