The North facing museum contains the collection brought to the surface after the archaeological dig on the remains of First Government House, once erected on part of the site. The museum is interpretive; much is made of imagining the original building - an elevated viewing area allows visitors to comprehend the original outline of the First Government House depicted in the pavement outside - while principal rooms of the now demolished building are recreated in the galleries.

The collection contains governors’ records, possessions, works of art, furniture and artefacts which came directly from the First Government House. Glass panels in the floor of the museum allow the footings and part of the dig to be viewed from above. The museum includes a 125 seat theatrette and a cafe.
