Visions of Sydney

The Sydney we know today has been shaped by its citizens. Visions of Sydney forms part of the City's Sustainable Sydney 2030 project to develop a long-term plan for the future. This project aims to encourage residents, workers and visitors to reflect on past visions and imagine the Sydney they want for the future.
What is your vision for Sydney in 2030?
1788 - 1842
From 1788, the ancient social patterns and physical pathways of the Gadigal were subjected to the unruly intrusions of a convict settlement.
1842 - 1900
This was a period of booming economy, book-ended by two depressions. Overseas trade increased enormously and Sydney became a huge city by the standards of the day.
1900 - 1945
There was turn-of-the-century enthusiasm for improvement through planning and building in the hope of transforming the physical and social fabric of the city.
1945 - 1970
After WWII, increased levels of public housing, education, libraries, health care and community services were provided.
1970 - 2000
The 1970s generated legislation in response to the environmental movement and to heritage interests.
2000 - 2030
‘In 2007 we asked Sydneysiders what kind of city they want Sydney to be in 2030,’ Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
