Project Background

Upgrading existing cycle routes in Erskineville is a priority project in the City’s new network. George, Flora and Concord Streets are already popular with cyclists because they connect St Peters to Erskineville, Newtown, Sydney University and the City.

The area also has one of the highest percentages of bike commuters in our Local Government Area (LGA). The proposed upgrades will make it safer and more convenient for residents, commuters, customers and staff to cycle around the area. They will also encourage more people to choose cycling as their mode of transport.

About the Cycleway

The changes proposed are known as a contra flow cycleway. This type of cycleway allows cyclists to travel in the opposite direction to traffic in a lane or area on the side of the road, and with traffic in an existing lane shared with cars and other motor vehicles.

This means cyclists can travel in both directions on streets that remain one way for motor vehicles. The City is committed to protecting our natural environment and no trees will be affected by the changes. Impact on parking will be minimal due to the proposed road upgrades in Erskineville.
