Derwent Street, Glebe

Cycleways

Derwent Street | St Johns Road | Arundel Street

The City is building a safe, convenient and sustainable 200 kilometre cycle network to reduce road congestion, cut emissions and improve public health. We have designed the network to improve connections between employment, recreation and residential destinations to make cycling an attractive transport choice.

Derwent Street

Derwent Street is being considered for a separated cycleway.

A separated cycleway improves safety for all road users by providing a two-way bicycle lane separated from vehicles by a concrete separator. Derwent Street is an important link in the cycleway network.

Derwent Street is an important connection from Glebe to the University of Sydney, Victoria Park and onwards to Redfern Station and Newtown, and provides a quieter alternative to Glebe Point Road. It will connect to an existing bike lane on St Johns Road that we plan to upgrade.

About the Cycleway

The concept plan proposes:

  • a 2.4 metre wide two-way separated cycleway on the eastern side of the street with concrete separator between the cycleway and the parking lane;
  • a bend-out at the intersection of Derwent and Mitchell Streets;
  • removing the existing refuge island on Derwent Street at the intersection with Catherine Street and installing a new planted island;
  • new line markings and bicycle logos on the cycleway;
  • new bicycle friendly stormwater grates;
  • new speed cushions to calm traffic;
  • a 20 metre section of shared path, on the footpath, at the intersection of Parramatta Road;
  • loss of approximately two parking spaces to allow for the new refuge island on Derwent Street that will give bicycle riders safer access to Catherine Street; and
  • loss of approximately eight parking spaces to protect existing trees.

Other than these spaces, parking along the eastern side of the street will be maintained next to the cycleway. The changes will not affect the footpath apart from a short section of shared path, nor will any trees be removed.

The City will provide residents and businesses with ongoing updates on all cycleway projects and the broader bicycle network.
