Shared Path Design Changes

The City is  proposing to create  a shared path for pedestrians and bike riders in Riley Street closure at Seale Street / Liverpool Lane.

Following extensive consultation with the community in January 2011, Council has revised the original concept. Several amendments have since been made to reflect feedback from the local community, raised in a series of meetings.

Proposed changes to the street closure near Liverpool Lane/Seale Street are available for download:

  • Moving the existing planter (A) away from buildings to provide safe width for the shared path on the eastern side of the pavement
  • The existing Jacaranda tree will be replaced by a new semi-mature Jacaranda tree in the relocated planter bed (B)
  • Installing a new planter between the first two properties north of Liverpool Lane
  • Providing blue shared path logos at each kerb ramp
  • Installing statutory shared path and other signs in the closure.

Work in Liverpool Lane includes installing:

  • Line markings and signs in Liverpool Lane and Seale Street, as well as in Riley Street on each end of the street closure
  • Speed hump and associated signs in Liverpool Lane near Riley Street to slow vehicles
  • A convex mirror on the south east corner of Liverpool Lane and Riley Street to improve sightlines for southbound bike riders and westbound vehicles.

The City has responded to the increase in bike riding by introducing a StreetShare strategy to promote safe riding, walking and driving. The strategy aims to promote safety and sharing by everyone who uses our streets, whether by car, bike or foot. It makes clear that bike riders must always give way to pedestrians on shared paths, and slow down and ring their bells on approach.
