Cycleways Implementation
Current Cycling Projects
The following projects are underway and are part of the delivery of improved cycle routes and pedestrian networks.
Kent Street
The City of Sydney is set to begin detailed designs for a separated cycleway along Kent Street in the CBD.
King Street
The King Street cycleway, the first of its kind in the CBD, links cyclists travelling to and from the inner west, across Pyrmont Bridge, with the rest of the City.
Bourke Street
The Bourke Street Cycleway provides an important connection between the Green Square Urban Renewal Area and Sydney Harbour, the CBD and Eastern Suburbs.
Union Street
Union Street is already a major pedestrian corridor and an important route for bike riders travelling to the CBD, visiting Pyrmont or using the ANZAC Bridge.
Missenden Road
Missenden Road, already a vibrant pedestrian precinct, will become an important route for cyclists travelling to Sydney University and Newtown. The City is proposing to build a separated, two-way cycleway along the City side of Missenden Road and Lyons Road.
College Street
The City of Sydney is proposing to build a cycleway along the western side of College Street. This proposed cycleway forms part of a new regional cycle route from Rozelle to Moore Park. The proposed College Street cycleway will be a separated bi-directional cycleway, combined with an off-road, shared pathway accommodating both cyclists and pedestrians at intersections.
Priority Cycleways
The City is fast-tracking a network of cycleways so that the community can benefit from a more sustainable, convenient, healthier form of transport.
We have prioritised 35 km of the 55 km of separated cycleways outlined in the City’s Cycling Strategy and Action Plan 2007–2017.
These projects have been chosen because they link to popular destinations, there is no need for major construction work, and, in some cases, other upgrades are already planned.
Each project should only take a few weeks to install and will involve re-configuring lanes, putting in signs and physical changes to slow down traffic, and making improvements to existing facilities like bus stops.
Alexandria Cycleway
The Alexandria cycleway is a priority project in the City’s new network and will provide a vital link between the Airport, Green Square and the City.
Erskineville Cycleway
Upgrades to three streets in Erskineville to make them safer and more accessible for cyclists is a priority project in the City’s new network. The road changes will improve the link for cyclists between St Peters to Erskineville, Newtown, Sydney University and the City.
