Fun in the sun provides fantastic end to

Sydney Rides Festival

Spring Cycle

Hundreds of families packed into Pirrama Park yesterday to celebrate the successful conclusion of the inaugural Sydney Rides Festival with a day of bike-based family fun.

Visitors enjoyed a variety of entertainment and cheered on the riders taking part in the first Bicycle NSW Spring Cycle City Ride as they crossed the finishing line.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said: “The family fun day provided the perfect end to the Sydney Rides Festival, with hundreds of families taking advantage of the glorious spring weather to enjoy a free day of bikes, fun and entertainment.

“There was something for everyone, with live music, a range of food stalls, and the chance for bike riders to get a free tune-up for their bikes as well as find out more about cycling routes around Sydney.

“Roving circus performers, a jumping castle, and arts and crafts events meant there was plenty to keep the young, and young at heart, amused and entertained.

“The number of people who attended reinforced the fact that Sydney is enjoying a cycling boom and that more families are finding bike riding is a healthy and fun way to exercise together.”

Omar Khalifa, CEO of Bicycle NSW, said: “There was a great turn-out for the 16-kilometre City Ride including a lot people who had never taken part in a ride like this before.

“The purpose of the ride was not only to showcase the best sites of Sydney but also to get people to try cycling in the city for the first time. We had so many happy, smiling families on the route it was fantastic!

“It helped introduce people to parts of the bike network and hopefully it will encourage more people to get out on their bikes and ride regularly.”

The first ever Sydney Rides Festival ran from October 8 to 16 and included a variety of new events as well as some well established events on the cycling calendar – the City’s hugely successful Ride to Work Day Breakfast, Bicycle NSW’s Spring Cycle, and the Bicycle Film Festival Sydney.

“The interest in the wide range of events that have made up the first-ever Sydney Rides Festival has been fantastic,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Hopefully it will have tempted more people who haven’t ridden a bike for a while to join the growing number who are finding that bike riding is a safe, quick and convenient way to get around the city.”
