Separated cycleway without parking

On a separated cycleway, bicycle riders have their own two-way dedicated lanes on the road which are separated from vehicles by a raised separator (usually a concrete median strip).

Where it is not possible to maintain both parking lanes, a separated cycleway may be placed between the footpath and a traffic lane (there is no parking adjacent to the cycleway).

By giving cyclists their own lane, many safety issues are immediately resolved. Of the 526 reported cycling accidents in the City of Sydney area between 2002 and 2007, 231 (44%) could have been prevented by separated cycleways.
