Resident & Business Parking Permits
Parking permits are used to exempt resident, business and visitor vehicles from some kerbside time restrictions and parking fees. This ensures that the parking controls needed to protect City neighbourhoods from commuter parking (eg by nearby office workers or shoppers), do not unreasonably affect residents.
Parking permits are valid only in the parking area where you live, and not all streets have exemptions for residents. Click here for maps of parking areas.
Permits are intended for use by those who do not have parking on their properties, or who have two cars but only one space. Given the intense competition for limited parking in inner-city areas, it is impossible to guarantee that permit holders will find a space.
Not all permit types are available in all City neighbourhoods. Visitor Permits are available only in Pyrmont, Ultimo, Glebe and Millers Point, while Business Permits are only available in Glebe, Ultimo and Pyrmont.
The City of Sydney is developing a standard permit parking policy that will address this inconsistency.
Eligibility Restrictions
Most properties approved for construction after 8 May 1996 are NOT eligible for parking permits. This condition is recorded on Section 149(5) certificates. The exclusion prevents new developments from worsening existing congestion and parking demand, and helps ensure some basement parking is provided.
A small number of other residential developments have limited access to the parking permit scheme as a condition of development consent. For more information, contact the City of Sydney on 02 9265 9333.
How to Apply
To apply for a Resident or Visitor parking permit please download the Residential Parking Permit Guide and Application Form. This document describes eligibility criteria and documents you will need to supply.
The Resident Parking Permit form can be used to apply for the Health Carer Visitor Parking Permit.
To apply for a Business Parking Permit please download the Business Parking Permit Guide and Form. Please note that Business Parking Permits are only available in Glebe, Ultimo and Pyrmont. Vehicles must be registered for business use, and permits will not be issued for vehicles primarily used for commuting to and from work.
Fees and Payment
Permit fees partially offset the cost of issuing permits and maintaining resident parking signage. On 1 July 2008, new parking permit fees were introduced to reward drivers of cleaner vehicles. For more information see Environmental Pricing of Parking Permits.
Current fees are indicated on the application form and guide, which can be downloaded below. To pay by credit card, please download the Credit Card Payment Form. You can also pay in person at any Council Location.
