Footway Usage Approvals

Footway Approvals

Nearly 500 outdoor dining areas operate within the City of Sydney, contributing to create vibrant and active streets and public places.

Outdoor dining can contribute to the quality of public places and urban life. Where activities on the footpath are diverse, active and interesting, people are encouraged to stay and enjoy that place. Outdoor dining also provides residents and visitors in the city the opportunity to be outdoors, enjoy the pleasant views the city has to offer and passively engage in people watching or actively engage with other members of the community. Places that are highly accessible for all people are more equitable and likely to be more pleasant and enjoyable.

The City of Sydney is committed to enhancing urban life and is keen to promote the continuing development of outdoor dining. If you want to use the footway for outdoor dining, you need to apply for footway usage approval from the City of Sydney.
