Sydney Film Festival and the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office present the Australian premiere of Tie saam gok (Triangle), an inventive new collaboration between three contemporary masters of Hong Kong cinema - Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To.

Drinking buddies Bo-sam (Simon Yam), Fai (Louis Koo), and Mok (Sun Honglei) struggle to make ends meet until one stormy evening a mysterious old man appears before them in a bar with a 'get rich quick' scheme and they set out to steal an ancient buried treasure.

This premise, with a nod to The Treasure of the Sierre Madre, sets in motion an ‘exquisite corpse’ mode of storytelling, made famous by the surrealists, where each of the three filmmakers evolves the plot based on the previous contribution.

Tsui’s first half hour is layered and frenetic, setting the complex thriller in motion; Lam’s middle section is character driven and shifts focus to the relationship between Bo-sam and his wife (Kelly Lin) and her affair with a cop on the case; and To’s section is darkly comic with a brilliantly stylised finale. The distinctive approaches of each filmmaker are fused by the Cheng Siu Keung’s noir-like cinematography and Guy Zerafa’s atmospheric score.

Running time 101 mins.
