Action Plan for People with Disabilities

New Plan Means Action for People With Disabilities

Sydney is committed to being an inclusive and accessible city for people with disabilities, and also seeks to be a global leader in relation to these issues. The City recognizes that by improving access to the built environment, facilities and services for people with a disability that others benefit as well and that the community benefits as a result of the increased ability to participate by people with a disability.

The City aims to provide a streamlined and mainstreamed approach to the inclusion of people with a disability.  So that regardless of ability, members of the public can conduct business with the City, visit the City, work in the city and work for the city as well as live in the city.

While much has been achieved over recent years, there is much left to achieve. The current Inclusion (Disability) Action Plan 2007-2011 builds on the work of the previous Action Plan and is the first such Action Plan since the amalgamation of the City of Sydney in 2004 with South Sydney City Council and parts of Leichhardt Council.  It was adopted on Monday 10 of March 2008.

This Plan was heavily consulted both internally and within the community to ensure that it was both a realistic and achievable document. Specific actions, timeframes, priorities and outcomes have been attributed to each aspect of the Plan The plan has many highlights, but also reflects the fact that inclusion can add a lot without costing anything. Highlights include:

  • The establishment of an Inclusion Advisory Panel
  • Ongoing Disability Awareness Training for all staff
  • The availability of major policy documents and other information in alternative formats upon request
  • Continued installation and maintenance of kerb ramps
  • Inclusion excellence award as part of City of Sydney Business Awards.

This Inclusion (Disability) Action Plan is lodged with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

You can download a copy of the plan here.  The plan will be available in alternative formats, in the coming weeks.
