There is a Community Worker available at the St Helen’s Centre and office on Monday and Thursday only. Activities for Over 55s continue at the Centre throughout the weekdays but the office is closed.
All Over 55s Centres are closed on public holidays. Should the Centre be closing for a day due to staff training or illness, prior notice is given as soon as possible and alternative arrangements will be made.
The Centre office may also be closed at times when the Community Worker is making a home visit or accompanying an activity.
If you wish to speak with the Community Worker, please telephone the Centre first on a Monday or Thursday to confirm their availability and arrange an appointment.
Services
The City of Sydney provides a range of services at St Helen’s Community Centre, including:
- Air conditioned bus transport to and from the centre for some activities
- Meals on Wheels (covering Glebe, Forest Lodge, Pyrmont and Ultimo)
- Affordable lunches (on Mondays and Thursdays)
- A Community Worker on-site who helps with activities and provides information, advocacy and support (on Mondays and Thursdays)
- After hours venue hire (meeting room)
- Referrals to the South Sydney Community Transport shopping bus
- Basic podiatry clinic
- Private podiatry clinic on Fridays.

A variety of recreational activities are organised by the centre, including:
- Growing Older Living Dangerously (GOLD) programs for a healthy, active lifestyle
- Tai Chi
- Aqua fitness classes at Cook + Phillip Park Pool and Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre
- The Sydney Realists (a discussion group)
- Book club
- Bridge
- Bingo
- University of the Third Age (U3A) courses
- Urban Walking Group
- Information sessions
- Yoga
- "Fitter and Stronger" exercise classes
- "Sitting down" exercise classes for frailer members
- Outings (full- and half-day bus trips).
Facilities
- Accessible, air conditioned building with accessible toilet
- Meeting room available for use
- Garden area.
St Helen's Community Centre is next door to Glebe Library and many other services are nearby. Getting to the centre is easy as it is on a number of State Transit bus routes.
Membership and fees
To use the services and facilities at St Helens Community Centre, residents must become members. The membership fee is minimal and reviewed annually.
