Road safety for pedestrians – watch out cars about

Walking safely through our City means being aware of heavy traffic conditions – stop, look, listen and think!

Peak times for pedestrian crashes are between 4pm and 7pm as people rush to go home. This is when you need to take extra care.

Major problem areas in the City are around train stations including Town Hall, Wynyard, Central, Martin Place and Redfern.

Pedestrian safety tips:

  • Always use pedestrian crossings
  • Never cross the road from behind a parked or stopped vehicle.
  • Never assume that an approaching driver can see you or will stop for you - their vision may be affected by the sun, poor light and parked cars
  • At intersections, check for turning vehicles before you leave the kerb and while you are crossing the road
  • Always supervise a child and hold their hand when crossing the road
  • Avoid using a mobile phone or portable media player while you are crossing the road. These devices can distract you from checking the traffic and can prevent you from hearing emergency vehicle sirens and other warning sounds, like car horns.

Remember when driving in the City, heavier traffic conditions and more pedestrians and bike riders mean lower traffic speeds are required.

In NSW, speeding factors in about 40 per cent of road deaths.

Council supports a 40km/h speed limit in high pedestrian areas.  A lower speed limit will improve safety for the many people who walk through our city each day.

Travelling slower means safer driving – it’s easier to stop and less distance is required to bring vehicles to a stop.
