Cultural Diversity Strategy 2008-2010 - Public Consultations
City of Sydney is a vibrant and diverse community with about 28% of our population from a non-English speaking background and half of our population are overseas born. This cultural diversity significantly contributes to the success of the City as an economic and cultural hub of Australia.
From November 2005 to February 2006, the City of Sydney‘s Multicultural Development Officer conducted a multicultural review in order to provide an integrated picture of Council’s services for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities. One of the review findings recommended that Council develop a Cultural Diversity Strategy to provide Council with clarity and purpose on how we work with our diverse communities.
Using the outcomes of past consultations, over recent months the Council has commenced drafting a Cultural Diversity Strategy. To ensure the document includes key community's issues, in June the City will conduct six community consultations to discuss the draft Cultural Diversity Strategy. Three of the consultations will cater to the city’s major language groups, namely Chinese (18 June), Greek (8 June) and Russian (8 June) with interpreters available to facilitate communication.
Two other consultations will be open to service providers for CALD communities and the general public on19 and 20 June. A consultation will also be held with the Inner Eastern Migrant Interagency on 21 June.
Attached is a schedule containing times and locations for each of the consultations. Each consultation will consist of a short presentation of the framework for the Draft Cultural Diversity Strategy, together with some of proposed actions to be implemented in 2008. Following this, participants will be invited to provide comments and input as part of an open discussion.
As your input is crucial in helping us shape the future of the City's services and support for CALD communities, we hope you will be able to attend one of the consultations.
