Kent Street Cycleway – Druitt to Liverpool Streets

Please Note: the exhibition period for this item has now closed.

In October 2010 the City of Sydney consulted on a proposed extension of the Kent Street separated cycleway from Druitt to Liverpool Streets.

We are working to balance the needs of all road users, and have now developed two designs to extend the cycleway. Safety is paramount during the design process.

Kent Street was approved by the NSW Transport Roads & Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) as the best route to link North Sydney and the inner west with the city centre, including Chinatown, Haymarket and Ultimo.

Bike riding in the City has increased dramatically in the last year. There are now thousands of riders on our roads every day. Last month more than 1,700 bike riders used the King and Kent Streets intersection during a six hour counting period – a 113% increase in the last two years.

We want your comments on the two proposed options. Proposed drawings are available for download.

What are the similarities and differences between each proposal?

  • Both options propose a separated cycleway on the eastern side of Kent Street between Druitt and Liverpool Streets
  • Both options provide a mix of loading zones, and parking for cars, buses, motorcycles and accessible parking with varying allocations in each block
  • Both options would allow parents of school students to stop on the northern side of Bathurst Street near St Andrew’s Place

Option 1

Would allow parents of school students to stop on the western side, and students would cross Kent Street at the traffic lights at Bathurst Street - in place of existing arrangements allowing drop off on the eastern side.

Approximate construction period of 34 weeks.

Option 1: View Looking north along Kent Street taken immediately north of Bathurst Street.

Option 1: View Looking north along Kent Street taken immediately north of Bathurst Street.

Option 2

Would allow parents to stop on the eastern side, as currently occurs, at a widened median where students would cross the cycleway under school control.

The footpath would be narrowed to accommodate the wider median – approximate construction period of 44 weeks (changing the kerb alignment to widen the median and narrow the footpath will take longer).

Option 2: View Looking north along Kent Street taken immediately north of Bathurst Street.
