Draft City of Sydney Affordable Rental Housing Strategy 2009-2014
Please Note: the exhibition period for this item has now closed.
The City recognises that it has a social, practical and legislative responsibility to address local housing needs on behalf of the community and that access to secure, appropriate and affordable housing is not only a basic requirement for all people, but also an essential component of an inclusive, dynamic and sustainable city.
The draft strategy is the City’s first step towards achieving Council’s targets for affordable rental housing which are detailed in the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision. Sustainable Sydney 2030 establishes an ambitious target for 2030, of 7.5% of City housing being social housing, and 7.5% being affordable rental housing delivered by ‘not-for-profit’ or other providers.
The overriding philosophy of the draft strategy is that lack of affordable housing in the City represents an economic and social risk to the community. The draft strategy takes a multi-pronged approach and works towards creating a planning and knowledge environment that will facilitate the protection and provision of more affordable housing in the City.
Following this exhibition, the draft strategy, together with a summary of submissions, will be reported to Council for its consideration.
