Naming Proposal ‘Pirrama Park’

The City of Sydney is proposing the name ‘Pirrama Park’ for the new park located on the former Water Police Site and the adjacent park known as Pyrmont Point Park.

The naval officers of the First Fleet documented the Indigenous names for the headlands, coves and major features of Sydney Harbour in the first years of colonisation. The name Pirrama is recorded on the early maps and journals. Pirrama is the original Aboriginal name for the Pyrmont Peninsula, providing a direct
connection to Aboriginal culture in the area and the park’s harbour side location.

In recognition of Sydney’s maritime history the boardwalk within the park is proposed to be named ‘Stevedore Walk’ to commemorate Pyrmont’s maritime workers and industries.

The report to Council 16 November 2009 is available for download.
