Proposed Alcohol Restrictions in City of Sydney

Please Note: the exhibition period for this item has now closed.

In response to requests from residents and local Police, the City of Sydney proposes to establish alcohol free zones (AFZ) in a number of streets in the Kings Cross, Newtown, Surry Hills, Leichardt and The Rocks Local Area Commands.

AFZ are established in locations impacted by alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and crime in order to improve local safety and amenity for all members of the City community.

AFZ provide police with the power to confiscate or tip out alcohol from any person who is found to be drinking alcohol, or about to drink alcohol, within the designated area.

Once an AFZ is established, it will be an offence to drink alcohol on any street or footpath where an AFZ exists. Any existing or future
liquor-licensed premises with an outdoor dining footway licence is exempt from AFZ restrictions. The AFZ will prohibit all other consumption of alcohol on footpaths and streets 24 hours a day, seven days a week for a period of up to four years, as indicated by signage.
