Child Care for East Sydney – Proposed Redevelopment of 277 Bourke Street Darlinghurst

The City of Sydney has identified a significant need for early childhood education and care in East Sydney. Last year the City responded to this need by purchasing a four-storey former warehouse at 277 Bourke Street. The building was chosen for its potential as a not-for-profit childcare centre, with space for commercial uses on the upper levels.

The City of Sydney has engaged design consultants to explore options for redevelopment that balance the need for childcare in East Sydney with that of public amenity. These options have now been created and are available for download.

The options show different ways of converting two floors of 277 Bourke Street into a new childcare centre for East Sydney. They also show ways of connecting the building to the outdoor play space in John Birt Memorial Playground. In addition, supporting research and analysis has been undertaken by the City, including a heritage report on Berwick Lane. These documents are available for download.

The Options were presented to the community at a meeting on 29 February and were on exhibition from 1 March – 14 March 2012.  While the formal exhibition period is over, interested community members are welcome to submit feedback at any time throughout the design process by emailing or phoning the project manager (contact details at end of page).

We are now continuing with the development of the project scope based on feedback received to date.  This will be presented to the community again in April/ May for further feedback.  A report will then be submitted to Council for a way forward on this project.
