Refurbishment of the Waterloo Oval Youth Facility
Background
The Waterloo Oval Youth Facility is located on the southern end of Waterloo Park, Waterloo. It is one of nine youth facilities within the City of Sydney local government area and is operated by Weave (formerly known as South Sydney Youth Services).
An upgrade to bring the building up to contemporary architectural standards and improve the amenity of the surrounding park has commenced. Innovative design elements and an accessible green roof will make this building unique. Contemporary features such as a mesh canopy with climbing plants will blend the structure into the surrounding landscape.
An improved facility will help South Sydney Youth Services deliver a wider range of services for young people in the area which will result in many positive social, cultural and community benefits.
The area is very popular with young people who use the nearby Waterloo Oval and Waterloo Skate Park which Council designed and built in consultation with the community.
Project
The City of Sydney is revitalising this building for South Sydney Youth Services. The works will include alterations and additions to the existing building and adjoining park area.
Features include:
- A new courtyard and accessible green roof terrace
- Improved natural lighting and ventilation
- Sustainable design initiatives including natural ventilation and lighting, sustainable building materials and a rainwater collection tank
- Climbing plants surrounding the building with a green ‘veil’
- New public toilets.
It will also incorporate environmental sustainability measures, including a green roof, new energy-efficient building materials, low energy lighting, thermal heating and cooling, natural ventilation and rainwater collection and reuse.
About 40 per cent of the Service's Redfern and Waterloo-based clients are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island young people. An improved youth facility will deliver practical services to help young people access education and employment, including:
- Medical and counselling services
- Increased education courses and workshops
- Practical training in construction, horticulture, business and enterprise.
Construction
Construction is well underway and is estimated to finish in mid 2012.
The building structure has been completed and the internal fitout underway with the flooring, joinery and electrical services to be completed. The steel canopy structure has been completed and the rooftop garden planted, which has commenced to grow over the structure. The installation of the landscaping walls around the building have commenced and anticipated to be completed by early April 2012. The remaining fitout and landscaping works are anticipated to be completed by May 2012.
