Balfour Street Park, Chippendale
Balfour Street Park was created as a gathering place for local residents and to provide an important connection through to Broadway for pedestrians and cyclists.
It is also a gateway to Central Park, a significant new green space at the centre of Frasers Property’s development of the old Carlton & United Breweries site on Broadway.
Balfour Street Park features an evocative design based on materials found within Chippendale. Paved with sandstone, recycled bricks and glass it is in keeping with existing, historic CUB buildings and a reference to the former days of the brewery.
The park’s innovative water feature captures and treats stormwater through planted cells. A series of lights in the shape of reeds illuminates the water feature at night.
Balfour Street Park was designed by the City and constructed by Frasers Property. The pocket park forms part of the Chippendale Improvement Plan, endorsed by Council in May 2007. The primary focus of the plan was to integrate local area traffic management and develop open space – thus Balfour Street was closed to traffic between O’Conner and Wellington Streets in March 2008.
Frasers commenced work on Balfour Park in October 2009 and the project was completed in April 2010.
The development of Central Park is ongoing. Once complete, Frasers will hand over Central Park and related infrastructure, including roads and footpaths, to the City of Sydney.
Central Park is a high quality, mixed use, sustainable urban renewal project. It will feature offices, shops, and restaurants as well as plenty of open space. Frasers has also helped establish an artist’s collective and food co-op adjacent to the site.
