Lilian Fowler Reserve and Newtown Public School Playground Upgrade
The recently renewed Lilian Fowler Reserve, located on the corner of Angel Street and Norfolk Street Newtown and adjacent to Newtown Public School, was officially opened on 5 November 2011.
Lilian Fowler Reserve and Newtown Public School Playground were upgraded with better play and sporting facilities, new landscaping and paving, and improved access.
The works included:
- Building a new playground with climbing structures, slides, swings and spinners, and an adventure play area
- Improving landscaping with new grass and trees, new garden beds, paving and seats
- Installing an underground stormwater harvesting system to irrigate the park and planting a rain garden to filter rainwater
- Using recycled pavers, bench seats, terracotta pipes and sandstone boulders to landscape the park
- Improving the school playground with new asphalt, two basketball courts, one netball court, one futsal court
- Installing a ramp to make the park and school more accessible
- Improving access between the school and park
- Installing bike racks
- Installing new signage.
The City of Sydney worked with Newtown Public School to carry out these improvements.
Consultation
Community consultation was undertaken in November 2009. A concept design was exhibited and a public consultation was held with the community which enabled local residents to provide comments on the concept design before progression to final design.
