Rushcutters Bay Park

Rushcutters Bay Park

Completed March 2011

Rushcutters Bay Park has been completely revitalised with all areas now open to residents and visitors. The City of Sydney’s $8.3 million improvements have made the park greener, more sustainable and safer.

Major work at Rushcutters Bay Park included:

  • Saving the well-loved grandstand at Reg Bartley Oval

Damaged by termites and water over time, the grandstand was structurally unsound. The City commissioned experts to help salvage it while respecting its historic value.
The grandstand was re-clad (some walls were re-built) and given new floors and internal timber columns. The upper-storey club rooms were renovated and a new kitchenette installed.

  • Installing safer, wider paths

Wide enough for a mix of walkers, joggers, bike riders, dog walkers and people pushing prams, the paths replace the park’s old, narrow, asphalt routes.
Some of the original paths had raised kerbs that were difficult for bikes and prams to navigate. These have been replaced by grass edging. All-weather, non-slip materials have been used and, for the first time, a path loops around Reg Bartley Oval.

  • Building a new Blackbutt timber kiosk

The new Blackbutt timber café/kiosk is surrounded by timber decking and palm trees, and features a pergola frame decorated with climbers. Overlooking the harbour and tennis courts, it is a perfect setting for dining.

  • Protecting the bay

Work included improving stormwater pipes to reduce flooding at Waratah Reserve.

A part of the greening plan for the park is a catch and cleanse system which will stop more than three million litres of potentially dirty stormwater running directly into Rushcutters Bay every year.

As well, the revitalisation of the park involved:

  • Restoring the Holdsworth steps and building new stairs to the harbour
  • Planting extra garden beds and 16 new trees (seven of them palm trees)
  • Installing lights along the main pathways
  • Replacing old seats and other park furniture
  • Relocating tennis courts and laying synthetic grass surfaces
  • Demolishing old amenities buildings and replacing them with toilets, change rooms and staff facilities with a smaller environmental impact.

Park Profile

Rushcutters Bay Park covers 8.9 hectares and is divided by a stormwater canal. The City of Sydney manages the western section, which is 4.35 hectares. The eastern section is under the control of Woollahra Council.
