Green Square Development
The City of Sydney is the driving force behind the transformation of the Green Square area into a new retail, residential and employment hub.
The $8 billion Green Square project will deliver:
- 22,000 jobs;
- 20,000 new homes, including hundreds of affordable housing units for key workers;
- 40,000 new residents.
Green Square is a 292 hectare area south of the city, taking in parts of the suburbs of Alexandria, Beaconsfield, Rosebery and Zetland.
It is just 4kms from central Sydney and 3.5km from Sydney Airport, making it a highly desirable place to live and work.
A new Town Centre is the feature piece of the development project. This will be a new commercial, retail and cultural centre for the area located near Green Square Station, and will eventually be home to approximately 5,500 residents and 7,000 workers. A large proportion of which will be delivered by the Landcom, Mirvac and Leighton (LML) consortium.

Federal funding for a greener Green Square
The City has welcomed a $3.75 million Federal Goverment grant to begin rolling out a low-carbon energy network for Green Square.
Under the City's masterplan, Green Square will be one of four low-carbon precincts where buildings can link into a trigeneration network.
Trigeneration energy systems use natural gas and produce electricity, heating and cooling for surrounding buildings. They are more than twice as energy efficient as coal-fired electricity and will reduce greenhouse emissions for connected buildings by up to 60 per cent.
The system will be installed at the former Royal South Sydney Hospital site in Zetland, along with a water recycling plant.

Work starts to create a new community hub
Work has started to transform the former South Sydney Hospital site in Zetland into a new community hub for Green Square. Derelict buildings are being demolished and four heritage buildings will be restored to be community spaces. A park will be added as well as affordable housing units.

Remediation involves the removal by a team of specialists - using world’s best practice processes - of asbestos, lead-based paint and light fittings containing chemicals. Public safety is paramount.
The contaminated deposits are being painstakingly removed from buildings and sections of soil at the former hospital site in Joynton Avenue, Zetland, and later derelict buildings will be demolished.
Strict containment and decontamination procedures are in place , with all the work overseen by WorkCover and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).
All asbestos waste will be double bagged in specialised waste bags and transported in leak-proof vehicles to a facility licensed by the OEH.
Remediation mirrors the work that was conducted at the former contaminated Homebush abattoir site to set in place the building of the fabulous Sydney Olympic Park precinct.
The City has appointed a company for the remediation work and a separate company to undertake 24 hour air monitoring to ensure the safety of the site at all times.
Four heritage buildings will be fully refurbished for use as community facilities, including a community hall, small theatre, multi-purpose hall, community shed, artists’ studios and workshops. Find out more from this video.
Library and plaza
Thank you to those people who submitted ideas for the new Green Square library - your feedback is now being used to create a design brief for the new building.
The Green Square Library will be in the heart of the Green Square Town Centre. It will link to the outdoors plaza which will be 4,200 square metres of public space (approximately the size of Wynyard Park). The Town Centre will also have two new parks, one of 5,000 square metres, about the size of Foley Park in Glebe.

Transport
The City is working with the NSW Government to improve public transport in the area. The Lord Mayor has called for immediate planning for new light rail with more frequent bus services in the short-term to feed into Green Square and Mascot railway stations.
Residents will also have access to new bicycle and walking paths. Our Connecting our City transport report focuses on the need for better transport to and from growing areas like Green Square. The report is currently open for feedback so visit here to find out more and make your comments.
