Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills
Prince Alfred Park new path network
The first extensive upgrade in 50 years
Work on Prince Alfred Park commenced in August 2009. This is the first extensive upgrade of the 7.5 hectare park in fifty years and Council has allocated $18.3 million to the project.
Exciting park improvements
The first stage of the park upgrade is now complete and includes a range of exciting improvements, such as:
- Upgrades to paths to make them accessible to all users (bicycle riders, people pushing prams and those in wheelchairs)
- The installation of custom-designed furniture and energy efficient lights
- A designated exercise area and new basketball courts
- The building of a new children’s playground featuring beautiful, hand-crafted rides.
Anyone for tennis?
The park's new tennis courts have international-standard court surfaces (the same as those used for the Australian Open tournament in Melbourne). Improving the tennis complex means it can host professional competitions and exhibition matches.
An extra court was built to provide more game time for casual users and more tennis classes.
A cool new pool and community facilities
Stages two and three of the Prince Alfred Park project relate to the redevelopment of the swimming pool complex and refurbishment of the Coronation Centre – a historic building used as a community facility.
Demolition of the old 50m pool was completed in 2009 and a new, stainless steel, laminated pool will be installed into the shell that was left behind. The pool complex will be enhanced with a new concourse, shaded area and landscaped sunbathing areas. A special play area for toddlers (called a ‘splash deck’) will be added.
The new pool will be temperature controlled and have a high-tech filtering system. The pool complex will have a café, new lighting and new fencing as well as new change rooms. The design of the pool area is intergrated into the overall landscape of the park.
In late 2008, Council endorsed a feasibility study into installing a cogeneration plant on the site and the subsequent investigation delayed work on the pool.
A call for tenders to install the City's trigeneration projects has been sent out. In the meantime, we have designed a purpose-built plant room to accommodate trigeneration or cogeneration in the future, allowing the park, pool and Coronation Centre to be taken off the energy grid.
The pool is expected to reopen to swimmers in mid 2012.
Approximately 1 ha of the park on the eastern side (near the pool) will be landscaped with hundreds of new trees, palms and plants. Even the roof and mounds of the pool complex will be green with life!
This section will also receive a new and expanded path network, new furniture, and new lighting, as well as stormwater treatment facilities and an irrigation tank.
Construction works on the Coronation Centre will commence mid-late 2011 and will be completed in 2012.

Background
Prince Alfred Park is an important part of the City’s open space network (which stretches from Green Square to the Botanic Gardens) and is the only major park unaffected by overshadowing from surrounding development.
Council is committed to conserving and improving Prince Alfred Park as a unique place for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The City undertook comprehensive community consultations to help shape the park’s upgrade. Feedback from 11,000 residents questionnaires plus material gathered at community events (open days and workshops) and stakeholder meetings was incorporated into the Plan of Management. Plans were on public exhibition for 28 days.
