TAYLOR SQUARE PLINTH PROJECT

The Public Comment Process

Six shortlisted artists were invited to submit developed concept proposals after initial submissions were received from local arts organisations.

The concept proposals were then exhibited in Taylor Square and on the City’s website. The local community were encouraged to comment on the works by email or SMS.

130 responses to the artworks were collected over 2 weeks.

Underworld by Dale Miles, received the most comments.

The final selection of the works was undertaken by a sub committee of the Public Art Advisory Panel that included curator Anne Loxley and artist Janet Laurence.

The committee responded to public comments as well as making key decisions about the appropriateness of the works.

A Selection of SMS (as sent)

  • Dale Miles Underworld. Totally significant. Like Orpheus' descent.
  • My vote is for Dale Miles"Underworld" proposal.  Amazing use of the existing structures that creates an edgy atmosphere; The spider legs appear fluidly elegant, yet robustly functional - captivating stuff!
  • I vote for Unravel by Louisa Dawson. Her piece is very much about sydney as a city which I think is relevant to all residents in our LGA. Thanks!

Email quotes

  • Most impressive proposal for the Plinth Project is without a doubt Dale Miles Underworld. It's visually and conceptually stunning and amazing and should win.
  • I would also like the panel to recommend to City of Sydney that Louisa Dawson’s Unravel is considered as a permanent sculpture in Taylor Square. The work is an excellent reference to former configuration of Taylor Square while creating an interesting piece of public art, of which Sydney needs more permanent installations.
  • I would like to vote for my favourite proposal for the Taylor Square Plinth Project. My vote goes to Dale Miles Underworld.
This work is vibrant, and brilliantly uses the plinth and site.
The contrast of the work and surrounding site is very exciting.
The illumination of the work at night creates another significant benefit and is fitting with the night time economy of the site. These are the reasons I think this is the most suitable work out of the six proposals.
  • I really love the visual power of Underworld. To me it is a beautifully indulgent idea - a soft sensuous proposal for an area that to me always feels pretty grim and hard.
