Capital Works Program

The City of Sydney is reclaiming and revitalising Sydney’s hidden laneways. We are improving these unique spaces so that they can be the setting for small bars, cafes, retail spaces and cultural activities, all adding to the creation of a more cultural and lively city centre.

Capital works to City laneways may include:

  • Improved lighting
  • Better paving
  • Installing street furniture and provision of additional space for outdoor dining
  • Traffic calming measures to improve pedestrian amenity and respond to business activation
  • Distinctive public art to transform the look of the laneway

Nine laneways have been identified for capital works.

Current projects include:

Albion Place

The City is in the process of revitalising Albion Place. Work will include:

  • installing new seating, lighting and planter boxes;
  • new paint and planting along the cinema wall; and
  • installing artworks on the fire doors.

Construction began Monday 9 January 2012 and is expected to be completed by March 2012. Work will take place between 7am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

Pedestrian and delivery access will be maintained at all times.

Most of the work will be done off-site and fixed in place with minimal impact to the surrounding businesses and patrons.

Unfortunatley there may still be some construction noise. To avoid disruption to the community, we will cease all noisy works during lunch hours between 12am – 2pm.

If you have any queries regarding construction on site, please contact Martin Pedersen on 0418 264 703 or email info@wilsonpedersen.com.au.

General enquiries, please contact City of Sydney, Kristin Gabriel on 02 9265 9333 or email kgabriel@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

Angel Place

Angel Place works were completed in November 2011.

Sydneysiders have the opportunity of enjoying outdoor dining in Angel Place laneway that has been transformed by new paving, lighting and a permanent hanging bird cage artwork

New traffic and parking conditions are now in place, which include:

  • Timed road closure and two way traffic access
A timed road closure has been put into effect. This will improve safety for pedestrians by reducing the number of vehicles in the laneway during peak pedestrian times. It will also provide opportunities for outdoor dining and other activities.

Angel Place will be closed between George Street and Challis House (4-14 Martin Place, CBD Sydney) from 11am-Midnight everyday. Bollards will be put in place to stop vehicles accessing the laneway during these times.

Vehicles parked within these hours will be locked in. Should your vehicle be locked in, please contact the City of Sydney on 02 9265 9333. Fees and charges for reopening the bollards during the timed road closure apply. Fines may be issued to illegally parked vehicles.

Access to loading docks will be maintained, and the Eastern end of Angel Place (between Pitt Street and the Challis House loading dock) will be open to traffic at all times.
  • Changes to parking conditions and new loading zone
The removal of kerb and gutters in the middle of Angel Place allows a new loading zone and replacement of “No Stopping” with “No Parking” signs in part of Angel Place. Operators are required to park in the designated loading zone between 11am-Midnight.
