City Centre Laneway Revitalisation
Albion Place, Sydney (off George Street).
Project Overview
The City of Sydney is breathing life back into City Centre laneways and reactivating these hidden, under-used city spaces. We are making changes to these unique spaces so they can be the setting for small bars, cafes, retail spaces and cultural activities, and contribute to a more lively, engaging city centre.
The Laneways Revitalisation Strategy responds to the community’s desire for a more vibrant, cultural, lively and connected city centre.
The Strategy provides for a range of initiatives including:
- Streetscape improvements
- Permanent and temporary art installations
- Cultural and historical interpretation
- Business incentives and mentoring to encourage small businesses such as cafes and bars featuring live music, specialist retail, fashion outlets and galleries.
The Strategy will be delivered over the long term with revitalisation activities being considered for a number of laneways. View Laneway map and locations.
Laneway projects are expected to bring significant economic benefits, including increased local patronage and tourism. Laneway businesses will benefit from their unique setting, while emerging artists will have new venues to showcase their talents.
The City is committed to consulting and working closely with local business people, the arts community and the broader community to help revitalise laneways.
