Crown Street, Surry Hills Upgrade

Crown Street Artist Impression

The City of Sydney plans to improve the retail precinct at the
southern end of Crown Street to make the area pedestrian-friendly and accessible, and create space for outdoor dining.

Last May, City staff spoke with local businesses on changes needed to improve this intersection. In response to these comments, the City has identified places where maintenance works will immediately improve the area.

Current works (stage one)

We are currently improving Baptist Street, between Cleveland Street and Boronia Lane, and on Cleveland Street, between Bourke and Marriott streets.

Baptist Street

Works in Baptist Street include:

  • new brick paving; and
  • fresh trees and plants in garden beds.

The City has engaged Sydney Harbour Paving to carry out this work between 7am-5pm, Monday to Friday and between 7am - 3pm Saturdays.

Cleveland Street

The works on Cleveland Street include:

  • new trees and garden beds; and
  • plants to screen pedestrians from the traffic.

Cleveland Street is a State road, and NSW Roads and Maritime Services requires work to be carried out in the evenings.

The City’s contractor, Ford Civil Pty Ltd, will carry out this work between 8.30pm and 5am, excluding Friday and Saturday nights and public holidays.

Work in both streets should be finished mid 2012.

The City and its contractors have planned works to minimise disruption to the community; however, there may be some noise from machinery, temporary restrictions to parking and changes to pedestrian access. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

Consultation & future works

An information session about the City’s plans to improve the area was held on Tuesday 6 December 2011 and designs for the proposed future work was on public exhibition until 19 December 2011.

In response to community feedback, Council passed a resolution on 20 February 2012 to expand the scope of the project to include a more extensive upgrade of the Crown Street section.

An additional $3.5 million has now been committed to the program for new paving, smart pole lighting and stone kerbs, improvements which will increase opportunities for outdoor dining and other social activities.

The resurfacing of the footpath along Crown Street has been postponed until a design of the more comprehensive works is created. The community will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the new designs later this year.
