King Street Cycle Route

Project Update

Project Update - October 2007

A report entitled “CBD Cycle Routes – Progress Update and Proposal for Early Implementation of the King Street Cycle Route” was considered by the Planning Development and Transport Committee on 30 July.

The report was endorsed by Council with the following resolution being passed:

  • Proceed with a final round of community consultation necessary to finalise detail design for the King Street cycle proposal;
  • Adjustment of budget allocation to allow construction works in King Street to commence in April 08; and
  • Commencement of design investigations for a north-south cycle route on Clarence Street.

A copy of the report can be obtained from Planning Development and Transport Committee Meeting 30 July 2007.

Summary

The provision of a dedicated north-south cycling route through the CBD is a key feature of the City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan.  Initial traffic modelling has been completed on several options for CBD cycle routes to connect key links.  The delivery of the King Street component of the CBD cycleway (between Sussex and Clarence Streets) is now proceeding.  Traffic modelling results also show that a bi-directional facility, separated from the carriageway, on the east side of Clarence Street, between Druitt Street and the Harbour Bridge is manageable from a traffic planning perspective.

The King Street route component (between Sussex Street and Kent Street) was part of the concept design and consultation undertaken in 2006.  A final round of consultation on the detailed design of the King Street facility commenced in September.

The delivery of the King Street component is proposed to be integrated with a comprehensive refurbishment of King Street and funded from the CBD Streetscape Upgrade program, Stage 3B.  Council has approved the adjustment of budget allocations to allow construction to commence in April 2008.

Traffic modelling has shown that the proposed implementation of a north-south cycle route on Kent Street will result in increased travel times. The preferred option of a segregated north-south route on Clarence Street (between the Harbour Bridge & Druitt Street) has been found to have minimal impact on traffic flows. Commencement of design investigation into the cycle route on Clarence Street is now proposed.

The Context – a sustainable City

City cyclists

A copy of the City of Sydney Cycle Strategy and Action Plan can be obtained here. The strategy aims to make cycling an equal transport choice for residents, workers and visitors by 2017. Specific targets include an increase in the number of bicycle trips made in the City of Sydney, as a percentage of total trips, from less that 2% in 2006, to 5% by 2011, and to 10% by 2016. The City has established a committee made up of Councillors, the RTA, Bike NSW, Bike Sydney and Bike East to monitor the implementation of the Plan.

Key components of the project are:

  • new granite pavements, stone kerbs and Smartpole lighting;
  • dedicated two-way cycle path, with a kerb separating the pedestrian footpath and cycleway;
  • provision of a new median strip to separate the cycleway from vehicular traffic on King Street;
  • relocation of street furniture such as Smartpoles and trees onto the new median strip, to maintain clear the width of the footpath on the northern side of King Street;
  • six new, semi-mature Liquidambar trees in the new median strip;
  • removal of on-street parking and loading zones on the northern side of King Street, between Sussex and Clarence Streets;
  • Loading zones will operate on the southern side of King Street between 9:30am and 3:30pm (Monday to Friday), with public parking after these hours and on weekends. A printable PDF brochure showing proposed changes to parking is available for download.
