King Street Lighting Upgrade

The City of Sydney, is installing new street lights along King Street in Newtown to take advantage of current electrical upgrade works being delivered by Ausgrid.

Council endorsed a proposal in December 2010 for the staged implementation of Smartpoles to provide high quality street lighting and to reduce visual clutter along King Street in central Newtown. The footings and underground conduits for the Smartpoles will be installed in conjunction with Ausgrid's upgrade works.

Fast tracking the installation of Smartpoles along King Street, between Missenden Road and Wilson Street, to establish them at the same time that electrical infrastructure is installed will minimise disruption to traders and the public and also save the cost of replacing standard Ausgrid light poles with Smartpoles in the future.

Ausgrid's works include new underground electrical conduits and cabling, together with above ground pillar boxes and standard light poles.

Project timing

Smartpole works are expected to take approximately 12-18 months to complete. Initial planning works involve design and heritage assessment to determine the best placement of new Smartpoles along the street to minimise the visual impact.

Construction will be undertaken in stages and will involve:

  • Excavation and installation of underground footings and conduits
  • Installation of poles
  • Cabling

New lighting will be progressively installed as follows:

  • Early - Mid 2011 - Preliminary works including installing underground footings. As the preliminary work is done, we will temporarily restore the footpaths.
  • Early 2012 - Installation of mid-block Smartpoles
  • 2012 – Installation of Smartpoles at signalised intersections (subject to approval by both the Roads and Traffic Authority and Council)
At the end of the project, the City will permanently restore the footpaths to their original condition.

Community consultation and liaison

The City will continue to liaise closely with the Newtown Business Precinct Association and with directly affected property owners to provide information on the delivery of the project.

During construction the City and its contractor will liaise closely with local retailers, businesses and residents living on King Street to provide project updates.
