Project Background
Major construction works to refurbish Pitt Street Mall were completed in early 2011.
The City’s project, in conjunction with the private development of shopping centres fronting the Mall, has helped to reinvigorate the Mall as a premier retail destination in the City centre.
With more than 65,000 pedestrians each day, Pitt Street Mall is the busiest retail pedestrian precinct in Sydney. The new design better caters for pedestrians, with new stone paving, and additional spaces for sitting, resting and socialising.
The refurbishment supports the City's Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan by helping create a vibrant and people-friendly city centre that improves and highlights the experience of outdoor city life.
Improvements to Pitt Street Mall
Improvements to the Mall include:
- New stone paving
- An additional group of trees near Market Street
- Environmentally sustainable design including diverting stormwater off awnings to tree pits, energy efficient lighting, and the use of sustainable materials
- Four new drinking fountains
- Additional seating for resting and socialising
- A new catenary lighting system.

Future Works
A new overhead catenary lighting system supported by cables attached to buildings will be installed by late 2011.
The lighting system will provide street lights and decorative lights and will be able to support seasonal displays, such as Christmas decorations.
