Project Background

Stanley Street, Sydney’s original little Italy, is one of the City’s main restaurant and café hubs. As a result of information gathered in the City of Sydney’s Local Action Plans for the City East area, the local community requested renewal of the area.

The community was consulted in February and again in August 2008 when the Concept Design and later the Detailed Design were presented and feedback received.

Project Scope

The City of Sydney has revised the scope of streetscape improvements for Stanley Street, East Sydney. Click here to read the amended project scope that went to Council.

Following community feedback on the designs, and concerns about impact of construction in the current economic environment, the scope of Stanley Street Upgrade has been amended and approved by the Council.

The work will focus on improvements that have reduced construction impacts and a shorter construction timeframe, minimising disruption.

Scope of Work

The City’s Stanley Street Improvements will include:

  • Improved cycling amenities in the precinct
  • More hanging baskets of flowers
  • Lighting improvements in some lane
  • New street trees and landscaping in existing blisters and traffic islands
  • Angle parking in Palmer Street
  • Re-surfacing of footpaths to remove irregularities.

 

Project Update

Majority of works for Stanley Street Upgrade are complete. The remaining works include the shared cycleway through the Riley Street closure at Liverpool Lane and contra flow cycleway at corner of Riley Street and Burton Street. To learn more about these projects click here.
