Green Square Transport
Achieving integrated and sustainable transport is at the core of planning for Green Square.
In 2008, City of Sydney worked with State agencies to develop a Transport Management Accessibility Plan (TMAP) for Green Square. These agencies include Transport for NSW, Roads and Traffic Authority, Railcorp, Landcom, and the Department of Planning and Infrastructure. The TMAP provided the policy framework for transport management in the area.
The TMAP aimed to guide the sustainable development of Green Square and the rollout of transport infrastructure and services by the State Government. The TMAP set a policy direction of ‘No Car Growth’ which aimed to keep the number of private car trips generated by the area to the same levels as they were prior to its redevelopment.
Much has happened since 2008 that affects the relationship of the TMAP to the delivery of Green Square. These include a change in State Government, the removal of the Green Square station access fee (in March 2011), Planning Proposals for the Green Square Town Centre and the public exhibition of the draft Sydney Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and Development Control Plans (DCP) (known as City Plan).
As a result of these changes, a review of the TMAP is underway. This review is being led and managed by Transport for NSW. The TMAP review (TMAP2) will focus on the Eastern Transit Corridor which will connect the Green Square Town Centre with neighbourhoods to the east and how transport can be coordinated and delivered to support the changes in density that are expected in Green Square. The review will also determine which agencies will be responsible for delivering which services or infrastructure – for example, Transport for NSW will be responsible for public transport related actions.
Given that existing land-use patterns are generally for industrial uses, being able to achieve ‘No Car Growth’ in the transition of Green Square to a high-density residential setting is being reinvestigated as part of the TMAP review.
Public transport services to Green Square have improved since 2008, but they are now struggling to service the growing demand of the area. Given the location of Green Square between the airport/port precinct and the City centre, there is competition for the road network from road freight, public transport and private car travel. The City is committed to providing infrastructure for walking and cycling, and advocating for improved public transport through the State.
The TMAP Reports are available to view or download. Once the 2011 review of the TMAP has been completed, they will be made available for download.
