About Clean Harbour Partners

What's Clean Harbour Partners?

  • Clean Harbour Partners is a City of Sydney program that raises awareness about stormwater pollution through partnerships with City businesses.
  • With the help of businesses, the program aims to keep the streets of the City clean of litter and cigarette butts and preserve the water quality of Sydney Harbour.
  • Over 200 businesses in the City of Sydney have joined Clean Harbour Partners.
  • Clean Harbour Partners are committed to keeping the workplace tidy and free of pollutants and also encouraging staff, customers, and tenants to be environmentally responsible.
  • The City is committed to supporting Partners by providing advice, educational resources and street cleaning services around the clock.

What's the issue?

Cigarette ButtsStormwater pollution:

  • Rain carries all litter and cigarette butts through stormwater pipes directly into Sydney harbour.
  • This pollutes our harbour by reducing water quality and harming marine life.
  • Cigarette butts, particularly after the smoking ban indoors for licensed premises, contribute significantly to the pollution: over 15,000 cigarette butts are found on the streets of Sydney daily
  • The City Cleansing Team does an excellent job at cleaning roads and footpaths, but local businesses and the community need to also take responsibility for their own actions.
  • The 'hotspots' for cigarette butt littering in the City are: Kings Cross, Broadway, Newtown, Martin Place, Pitt Street Mall and Chinatown
