Rolling Butt Blitz’

Butt Blitz team memberButt Blitz teams of City Rangers, Waste Education staff and Cleansing staff have been hitting the streets, chatting to smokers about why it is important to dispose of butts responsibly and giving away thousands of personal ashtrays in cigarette littering hot spots in Sydney over the last 4 months.

Rolling Blitzs will continue throughout the year in an effort to curb the increase in butt littering that has occurred since the no smoking ban came into effect last year in licensed premises.

So far we have been to:

  • 19 March 2008 - Kings Cross & Darlinghurst
  • 20 March 2008 – CBD & Chinatown
  • 10 April 2008 – Newtown & Broadway
  • 14 April 2008 –Chinese Cultural Day, Chinatown
  • 8 May 2008 – Westpac Building, Kent St, CBD
  • 5 June 2008 – World Environment Day, Pitt St Mall, Martin Place & Surry Hills

Smokers Survey

To understand smoker’s habits, we surveyed 500 smokers who work and live in the LGA before the Rolling Butt Blitz’ and uncovered the following:

  • Over 50% of smokers have littered cigarette butts
  • 11% think littering cigarette butts is acceptable in public places
  • 95% knows it impacts on the environment, with most indicating that it causes pollution, looks unsightly and harms marine life
  • 92% would use a personal ashtray if they were given one

Clean Harbour Partners Review

Clean Harbour Partners has been running for 8 years now and it's time to take a fresh look at the program so that we can reflect on past achievements, assess if the message and delivery approaches are still relevant and develop a future plan for Clean Harbour Partners so it suits the changing needs of the City and the environment.

So stay tuned to see the new CHP soon!
