Coal Seam Gas

The City of Sydney does not support the exploration of coal seam methane gas in built up areas.

The City made its position on coal seam gas very clear in a Council resolution passed in December 2010 – we find hydraulic fracturing or ‘fraccing’ unacceptable due to the risks it poses to the environment.

We are delighted that the NSW Government has announced new environmental and community consultation conditions for coal and coal seam gas mining.

And we welcome its six month moratorium on the use of ‘fraccing’ during coal seam gas drilling.

The City believes there should be an independent investigation into the full environmental and social impacts of coal seam gas exploration and extraction.

Gas exploration licences are issued by the State Government. The City believes that no new gas exploration licences should be issued until applications have been independently assessed by environmental experts and the community is fully consulted.
